The fondacion Berrocal is launching their new museum in Andalusia.

BerrOscOpe is an installation which aims at engaging the visitor in a spatial experience full of discoveries and surprises about the work of the artist Miguel Berrocal.

The BerrOscOpe allows for a physical exploration of a virtual reality. It is a single user installation. A screen is attached to a telescopic arm and can be moved in various ways through space. The joystick and the screen are merged into one object to enhance the feeling of exploring and examining. The viewable content is placed in a spherical virtual space that matches the physical space of the installation. The visitor can explore the work of Berrocal by guiding the screen within this space. The BerrOscOpe is providing a simple menu on screen that helps to navigate and choose the content. The typology of visualization in space is a reference to what kind of information it is. The available content is assigned a behavior in space which reflect its information status.

Berrocal developped his puzzle sculptures using sections to keep track of the complex interior spatial composition. These sections can be visualized in space by placing them at the position of their original cut through the sculpture. This will allow the visitor to scan through the sections in space and get a better understanding of the complexity of the process in Berrocal’s work.
Closely related to the sections are the wireframe drawings in axonometric perspective. These visualizations are like an x-ray at the doctor’s, they let you take peak inside a body of work and reveal its interior complexity. The exploded-view within the BerrOscOpe has a dynamic behaviour. The single pieces behave like free floating particles in space.
The visitors are walking through the disassembled pieces, floating in space without gravitation. The disassembly process is animated and the visitor can watch the sculpture “explode” and disassemble into its single pieces. Play a (simplified) game to assemble and get assisted if you can’t make the next step in time.

The BerrOscOpe offers more than just viewing the Berrocal sculptures. The visitor can access extra content provided by the foundation. In a three dimensional image galaxy he can find other related content. There are stories about the people in Berrocal’s life, crossing his biography, there is a video gallery, drawings and background information about the sculpture, a section with the title “the making of” which takes you to the workshop and displays images and information about the foundry.
